Want to workout like Superman? Askmen.com provided the scoop in a piece in their online magazine.
Henry Cavill’s trainer recently revealed the details behind the Superman star’s training routine. Cavill’s strength trainer, Michael Blevins, created a regimen that involves preparation, bulking, leaning out, and maintenance.
While you don’t need supernatural powers to complete the workout line-up, we can see how Cavill has developed into ‘The Man of Steel’. The routine is not for beginners, but beginners could definitely add select components to their current fitness plan.
In an interview with Men’s Health, Blevin’s shared the routine below:
Perform once a week. Exercises marked with a letter (“A,” “B,” and so on) are done in sequence and flow into each other. You’ll use the same weight and do one set of A, then immediately go on to one set of B, and so on for all the moves in the group. Rest, then repeat the sequence.
1. Hang Clean And Jerk : Work up to one heavy rep.
2A. Clean Pull: 4 sets, 1 repetition
2B. Power Clean: 4 sets, 1 repetition
2C. Front Squat: 4 sets, 1 repetition
2D. Push Press: 4 sets, 1 repetition
2E. Split Jerk: 4 sets, 1 repetition
3. Front Squat: Work up to one-rep maximum.
4A. Front Squat: 3 sets, 7 repetitions
4B. Back Squat: 3 sets, 13 repetitions
Blevins also explained the reasoning behind the regime he built for Cavill.
“Cavill’s program for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice comprised four phases: preparation, bulking, leaning out, and maintenance. The bulking phase, demonstrated here, centers on Olympic weightlifting movements—complex but hugely effective lifts that build muscle, strength, and speed simultaneously. When done in circuit fashion, they’re also very demanding on the heart, which then boosts endurance.”
“There’s a misconception that cardio will negatively impact muscle,” says Blevins. “A larger work capacity can allow you to train harder and longer. Building muscle without conditioning is akin to having an impressive engine without a gas tank—it’s worthless. This conditioning helped later when trimming fat,” and made Cavill look as heroic as the part (and the citizens of Metropolis) required.
Just a reminder, this is a more advanced workout, so don’t just jump in with both feet with this one. Modify the movements to fit your own level of fitness. And be sure to consult with your physician before starting any exercise regimen.
